About the Sabai
The Singapore Hindu Sabai exists to promote the religious, social, intellectual, cultural and general welfare of the Hindu community in Singapore. It is a registered charity, run by an elected committee of volunteers, and it has served that purpose across generations of Singapore's Hindu families.
A long record of speaking for the community.
The Sabai has represented Hindu interests in Singapore across generations. In 1976, when the Government moved to close the crematorium operations at Upper Aljunied Road, the Sabai petitioned the Minister for Social Affairs to secure a site where Hindu families could continue traditional firewood cremation. Work of that kind — practical, unglamorous, and on behalf of people who have no other voice — has been the Sabai's purpose from the beginning.

The Sabai co-organises the Indian New Year Show with Kampong Chai Chee CC's Indian Activity Executive Committee, staged by around 150 residents.

The Sabai continues to provide advisory, education and welfare support from its premises at Jalan Melor.
What the Sabai was constituted to do
The Sabai was constituted to:
- Promote the religious, social, intellectual, cultural and general welfare of the Hindu community in Singapore
- Advise members and the wider Hindu community on matters of Hindu religion, custom and tradition
- Provide scholarships, bursaries and grants for the education of Hindu children in need
- Assist with the funeral expenses of the destitute, of orphans, and of poor members of the Hindu community
- Publish newsletters, journals, books and other material promoting Hindu culture and welfare
- Affiliate with Hindu temples and cultural organisations in the advancement of Hindu religion, education and welfare
- Establish and support institutions serving the community, including childcare and educational facilities
- Convene talks by scholars and practitioners on matters relevant to the community
How we are run
The Sabai is governed by an elected Management Committee of volunteers, accountable to its members and to the Commissioner of Charities. Our annual reports and financial statements are filed publicly and may be viewed on Singapore's Charity Portal.
